Malaysia Was Ranked Best In Asia In The Pilot 2006 Environment Performance Index
Malaysia was ranked 9th, 19 places ahead of the United States in the Pilot 2006 Environment Performance Index (EPI), a study on the environmental performances of 133 countries by two of the United States’ best known educational institutions, Yale and Columbia University.
The Malaysia's achievement was ranked best in Asia and ahead of many western developed countries. The EPI study was collaborated by Word Economic Forum and Joint Research Centre (JRC), European Commission. It has been issued on 26 January 2006 at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
The EPI evaluated a number of environmental characteristics prevalent in the 133 countries under scrutiny, ranging from air pollution, clean drinking water, adequate sanitation, low ozone levels, eco-region protection, timber harvest rate, to sustainable fisheries and low greenhouse gas emissions.
Malaysia scored 83.3 out of 100 for overall categories namely Environmental Health, Air Quality, Water Resources, Productive Natural Resources, Biodiversity and Habitat, and Sustainable Energy. Other selected Asian countries rankings, Japan 14th, Thailand 61st and Indonesia 79th.
